Na̱gedzi after his grandfather, the late Chief Andy Frank of the K’ómoks First Nation. Andy has also had the honour of being seated with the ‘Na̱mg̱is T̓sit̓sa̱ł’walag̱a̱me’ name of Ḵ̓wa̱mxa̱laga̱lis I’nis. Influenced heavily by his grandmother, he has always been driven to uphold the traditions of both the K’ómoks and Kwakwa̱ka̱’wakw First Nations. In this regard, Andy has pursued avenues where he can sing traditional songs and perform ceremonial dances at potlatches and in a number of different dance groups, most notably the Le-La-La Dancers, the Gwa’wina Dancers and the K’umugwe Dancers. Pursuing other areas of traditional culture has also led Andy to complete a Master’s degree in anthropology. Because the K’ómoks First Nation lies on the border between the larger Salish and Kwakwa̱ka̱’wakw realms, his thesis focused on notions and expressions of contemporary Comox identity. His work in anthropology provided him with a background in linguistics which subsequently inspired him to create a company, Copper Canoe, Inc, that specialized in the creation of Aboriginal language media.Andy feels that his artwork stands on par with these other accomplishments. Although he began drawing Northwest Coast art at an early age, Andy’s first serious attempt wasn’t until 1990 when he started designing and painting chilkat-style blankets for use in potlatch dancing. From these early self-taught lessons, he has tried to follow in the footsteps of his Kwakwa̱ka̱’wakw relatives in creating bold and unique representations that remain rooted in the age-old traditions of his ancestors. Helin. My great grandparents were Maude and Henry Helin-both chiefs of the Tsimshian nation. Born November 11, 1987 in nanaimo, B.C. Canada. I’ve creatively assisted my father Bill Helin with since I was 6 years old with several big wood sculpture projects. At the age of 8 I was the youngest carver to work on the “Worlds Tallest” totem pole for the Commonwealth games in Victoria B.C. That same year I helped my dad carve the 40ft long “Ravensong” canoe and helped paddle it to the Victoria Common wealth Games. For 10 years now I have been independently creating my own custom pieces of art while being apprenticed under my dads wing for the first 4 years. I’ve made thousands of custom pieces over the years from rings, bracelets, pendants, and earrings and have accumulated a ton of experience and feel I have mastered the tsimshian traditional style. At a young age her family moved to Alaska where her passion for the outdoors was nurtured and her drive to capture it through paint blossomed. For the next 20 years she painted the rugged landscapes and beautiful animals that resided there.. Her original paintings are exhibited across the U.S. and can be found in collections around the world. He apprenticed with noted Gitxsan artist Phillip Jane & Master Carvers: Walter Harris and Earl Muldon. Daniel combined his Gitxsan and Celtic Heritage by creating fluid designs pairing forms in a whimsical approach, setting him apart from his peers. He enjoys experimenting in silver and gold and improving his carving techniques in wood. His medium of choice depends on what he is able to discover, and primarily works in birch, maple, alder and cedar, as well as silver and gold. As well as having drawings published in a few books and jewellery pieces reproduced by Fredericks Design. Daniel assisted Earl in 2009, along with apprentices, Arlene Ness and Rick Wesley, in creating the poles installed at the Hazelton Campus of the Northwest Community College. He reveals beautiful images from the pieces he creates and is a truly gifted artist whose innovations and unique depictions show the evolution of Gitxsan art for future generations to embrace and understand. Having started out in drawing and painting and always experimenting with many different techniques such as graphite pencils, pastels and paint, he can almost be architechtural in his drawings. She currently resides in Bellingham WA with her husband. Art and design has always been an interest even from an early age. It wasn’t until Lori moved to Baku, Azerbaijan in her forties, that she began to take lessons in oil painting. She was taught by a wonderful New Zealand artist and found it to be an amazing experience that allowed her creativity to be channeled in a way she had never experienced before. After her time in Azerbaijan working on her art and immersing herself in the international art scene there, she found her way to Houston, where she studied at the Art League with a variety of local artists. Lori took this time to explore different mediums and worked to perfect her technique and push her creativity. She continues to seek out avenues to help develop her further as an artist. Striving to surprise the viewer, color, form and perspective is the focus in her art. Lori feels it is a blessing to be able to create and share her work, art has proven to be a great source of joy for her. She has been a first and second place winner in the artist of the month challenge with Whatcom Art Guild. Lori is a featured artist in a local business in and around Bellingham. Lee received her BFA (Honors) from the University of British Columbia and now resides in the beautiful Okanagan Valley in BC. She is well known for her incredible use of colour and her very distinct and recognizable palette is a rainbow that showers us with a positive sense of emotional energy and healing.
